CRC loses important defender
I was saddened to read about Mr. Leo Peters' death. My association with Mr. Peters has been quite limited. Better than 35 years ago, my family was a recipient of his generosity when my father passed away at an early age. My mother only knew him as a fellow parent of the same school. Other than that, what I know of him is what I've read in The Grand Rapids Press.
His critics should put themselves in his place. You are an aging man, set in your ways. Like many people, your relationship with God is the most important part of your life. That aspect is manifested on Earth in the form of your chosen church.
This church, to some, has begun to or has already reversed itself in its teachings, leaving an older generation confused and upset about its validity and devotion to God's word. Just as government needs its checks and balances, so does a church. I believe Mr. Peters was trying to counter what he perceived as changes that were too fast and too liberal within the church.
I do not agree with how Mr. Peters renewed faithfulness and his views were representative of many people.
It is unfortunate that The Press used the occasion of Mr. Peters' death to visit a past past controversy and to allow publication of quotes from an interview which cast a deceased person in an unkind manner. It is unfortunate that Rev. Hofman's reaction was ungracious and unhelpful to a family in mourning.
