APPRECIATING the LEO PETERS 2 FAMILY...because my late grandfather Leo Peters was the first to trademark the "Butterball" name (which he later sold to the turkey company ie armour, but retained the rights to use the name for his butter factory, ie butterball farms,) and was also involved in various meat endeavors, and my memories of Thanksgiving revolve around a big meal at the "butterball mansion" I am adding a thanksgiving section to this blog!

ALL of the PETERS KIDS (from the 1st & 2nd marriages, that's 5 + 3) ATTENDED GRAND RAPIDS CHRISTIAN HIGH and CALVIN COLLEGE(except one of the late daughters, Brenda, who was developmantally disabled) , and attended CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCHES in Grand Rapids growing up (and at least 4 of the grandchildren are also Eagle-Knights )
Mark was the only son of the late Leo Peters , and inherited the Butterball Farms business (also based in Grand Rapids). They continue to manufacture "fancy butter" , a tiny version of which is provided with the hotcakes at McDonalds around the USA.
Butterball actually began in Evanston Ilinois, and then moved to West Michigan. The older daughters from Leo Peters 1st marriage (to Helen, who died at a young age) helped their father as he began experimenting with making butter beautiful in their apartment home near Lake Michigan in the Chicago area. Once it began to sell well, Leo moved to Grand Rapids, bought the mansion, established a factory on Buchanan Avenue, and the rest, as they say, is history.*
Mark recently sold the "Butterball Mansion" and apparently left much of the estate to the new owner, who apparently is selling it off , and re-selling the mansion ?

*albeit, while Leo Peters was a smart businessman, there are those family members who contend he was NOT a good person in terms of relationships & family, which, when all is said and done, is most important , right ? At least if it is properly aligned with a relationship with Jesus Christ: Father -Son- &- Holy Spirit. Being a successful business person and making lots of money means very little in the end if the bigger picture of one's life does not do something positive in the eyes of our Lord God. Leo attended LaGrave Avenue CRC. He also sent all his kids to the Christian schools, and he, himself, also attended Calvin College. For some, however, the Christian schools, are just a good "private" option.
How about any of you at Calvin or Christian High? Are you there because of CHRIST or because it's a good , private, option to public education ? I HOPE AND PRAY you're there for the RIGHT REASONS! Yes, I went there too (Calvin & GRCH) and now I am in southern California. I KNOW how easy it is to go thru the motions of church and Christian education. But at some point you have to make a SERIOUS CRITICAL INTROSPECTIVE DECISION to truly follow Christ and put your MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS... ; don't just go thru the motions ! GOD BLESS YOU. Anyway, in 1951, Leo Peters purchased the trademark from Walker for $10. Having collected the interesting mark, Peters didn't know what to use it for at first (like I said, some of this story doesn't really pass muster), so while he was deciding, he licensed it to a Chicago meat processing company, Swift & Co., famous for having retained its status as a major food company even after serving as a poster child and punching bag for Teddy' Roosevelt's trust-busting crusade a few decades earlier.
The first BUTTERBALL brand turkey reportedly was sold by Swift in 1954. Based on trademark assignment records, the product must have been a hit because Leo Peters permanently and formally licensed or assigned the registration to Swift in 1956. Peters apparently retained non-poultry related rights in the BUTTERBALL mark and, in the late 1950's or early 1960's, founded Butterball Farms, Inc., a butter company in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that is still in business but has nothing to do with turkey..."

Not that Leo was a great guy, but he was never ostentatious with his money, except for the house itself.

They've had to denigrate us as a family and individuals to justify basically stealing from the P1 family. And they have to keep doing so to keep it that way... [not directly related to terrorism, but] i don't normally do this, but PLEASE PRAY for a "PARADIGM SHIFT" re MY FAMILY RELATIVES WHO I CALL THE "PETERS 2 FAMILY"
...One of my relatives, Nancy Peters, just died, and it's a long convoluted "soap opera" about my Peters family relatives...she was actually my "step grandma" (my real grandma died before I was born)...and there are lots of details about what happened when Nancy married my late grandfather Leo Peters, and she had kids of her own , hence the "Peters 2" family versus the "Peters 1" family...and my grandfather owned Butterball Farms in Grand Rapids MI and they sell butter to McDonalds Restaurants which made them very successful and financially well-to-do which is great but it also meant a lot of "money issues" with regards to family members and family feuds etc...and lots of it revolved around Nancy and her kids, (the Peters 2 kids), and now she just died in November 2016 and everybody is gathering for the funeral in west Michigan, and I am hoping & praying for a GIGANTIC PARADIGM SHIFT to reflect upon God's sense of justice and righteousness, not man's. And I have members of my family attending the funeral who were adversely affected by this long saga...I myself am not going...too far to travel for me at the moment..; but I am praying that my family members who are attending can help effectuate a NEW PARADIGM...this is a "window of opportunity" open only for a short while because of the death of Nancy, and so I ask ALL OF YOU who read this, IF YOU are Christian believers and persons of prayer to ADD YOUR PRAYERS to this hope for a new paradigm of TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS & JUSTICE...this will effect more than just my small family and more than just the Peters 2 but really it "trickles down" to all segments of society. . There were a lot of VERY SERIOUS GRIEVOUS ISSUES that happened over time [ a different kind of "terror" ] that need to be rectified and I am hoping and praying for this to happen now, God Willing, even though perhaps some hearts are too hardened. Let them release their clinging, and along with it the need to denigrate & mistreat others ,including your faithful servant, John Philip A.K ....Lord U alone know my heart ♥ & while I am not perfect, I don't deserve persecution from the Peters2 family or any of the Peters, especially not anymore... And Nancy particularly disliked me. I hope she made peace with God about her unfair bias before she passed, but let bygones be bygones and now let us hope for a new paradigm in peters2 history ...not that I plan to visit with them ever again necessarily but I want their hearts 💕 changed for the sake of the cross.... RIP re my STEP-GRANDMA "Nancy Peters Obituary" (2nd wife of Butterball Farms Founder, the late Leo Peters)

SHE was my grandfather Leo Peters 2nd wife, so not really my grandma, but sort of, albeit she never really had any affection for us as our real grandma normally would have (had she lived long enough)...; nonetheless we had a few nice times with her at the cottage & a few other holiday events,
...as a Christian my main concern is for the repose of her soul...I know she was involved with the church but I don't know how much she grew as a Christian in terms of love for others, or love for the kids & grandkids from the 1st family (ie Peters I family) . But I don't want to rehash all that crazy stuff that I've tried to forget about...

(mark, ani, teri) ...thoughts & prayers for them...I also just heard that one of the cottage neighbors, Kim Westrate, passed away from cancer a few years ago...so sad, nice family. greetings thoughts & prayers to the Westrates.

I will NEVER FORGET MY AUNT MARTHA VAN GENDEREN SAYING " I COUNT MY TOOLS"
It was the summer of '93. I will NEVER FORGET MY AUNT MARTHA VAN GENDEREN SAYING " I COUNT MY TOOLS" ...they had invited me to their home in Jackson Wyoming...I thought out of respect for me as a person, but little-by-little I realized that for some reason she thought I was a dishonest, maybe even a thief; and therefore she thought she needed to warm me, her beloved nephew (or so I thought that was how she thought of me...why else invite me? ) , that she 'COUNTED HER TOOLS" (or her husband's tools, my uncle warren). I still remember thinking to myself, "SHE COUNTS HER TOOLS?! That's kind of neurotic don't you think?"...It took me a LONG TIME, actually after I left behind Jackson Hole to realize that she was telling me not to steal my uncle's tools because she counted them. What the heck? That's really a low-ball thing to think of me. I don't STEAL. I did shoplift a little bit during my college days, but later in life I repaid all those debts, not that anybody suffered from my little survival shoplifts. But why would she think I was a thief? And especially if she thought I was such a low-life, why would she invite me to stay at their home? I realized later they thought they could reform me. The only problem was that I was already reformed and a reformer. I was already heading for seminary and Christian ministry in a round-about way. Anyways, I had NO THOUGHT OF, nor intention of, nor need to, steal her tools or anybody else's tools. Just saying. I don't steal. And for that matter, as some great person once said, TAKE the LOG OUT OF YOUR OWN EYE FIRST.

ACTUALLY, this goes way back in Peters family history because the Peters II family learned to distrust people for self-serving reasons. If you can marginalize a person by convincing yourself they are not of good character, then you have the right to mistreat them (according to their logic). So if they heard a person did one bad thing ten years ago, such a person is/was forever tarnished. There was no such thing as redemption (which is not Christian) in their book. It also lacked in the fact that they couldn't think of themselves as sinners, apart from maybe saying so in a technical sense. Furthermore, they were/are a very wealthy family and therefore shoplifting or stealing would never be a temptation for them. And so the only real sins in their book were sins that they themselves were exempt from, such as sins of thievery, simply because they were a wealthy family.
Nevermind the fact that there are plenty of other sins they could easily be guilty of: lust, wrath, sloth, pride, envy, greed, gluttony to begin with. For that matter, they might not steal or shoplift but were they greedy? Are there some wealthy people that actually CAUSE crime because they don't share? What if one person owned all the wealth in one city and everybody else was beholden to that one person to share with them for survival? What if that person suddenly decided not to share at all? The people would have no choice but to steal for survival. And if such is the case, who is guilty of sin? I would say the person who does not share. Let us not forget that nothing we own is truly ours, but it is entrusted to us by God as stewards. This does not mean we should resort to socialism or communism whereby everybody gets an equal amount regardless of effort, talent, industry, etc. But it does require a certain amount of democracy in distribution of the wealth.
Wealthy people need to be reminded of this over and over and over again. My aunt Martha needed such a reminder. And still needs it. And I'm not saying she owes me anything, nor that I want or need anything from her. I didn't accept her invitation to stay in Jackson Wyoming out of need but out of hospitality. It is a nice thing to accept a person's invitation. To not do so is rude sometimes. I believed as a young Christian evangelical person that I should get to know my aunt & uncle and cousins better and maybe even share the love of Christ with them. It never worked out to that end I don't think because there was too much negative suspicion by them towards me. I never realized I was such a low-life in their eyes. Once you realize that a certain person has such a negative perception of you , the best thing to do is get away. You won't change their perception no matter how good you try to be in their presence. That's because often it is an unconscious self-serving negative suspicion on their part.
A few years later as I was going thru seminary I made a point of sending them a personal check to cover the "rent" for some of the time I spent there. They didn't cash it, but I'm glad I made the point of doing so. It meant a lot. I have never needed to beg. I have always had enough one way or another by the grace of God. He truly does provide, and I am grateful. I continue to evangelize and run my ministry full-time, and travel and attend churches, and grow spiritually , even as I also am not a perfect person. God be with my Aunt Martha & Uncle Warren & their kids (my cousins). Let us hope that someday we can meet eachother with mutual respect and regard for eachother.
